ADULT CLASSES

Karate classes for adults
is a one of a kind experience that transcends the physical.

At Rokah Karate we pride ourselves in our direct lineage to the founders of Karate. It is this direct transmission of the art that enables us to teach the underlying principles, rather than just copy the outside form of the technique.

We teach the “why” and “how”, and those are the subtleties that allow for unlimited development of each practitioner according to his/her unique abilities.

Karate is a self defense that relies on skill, rather than size or strength. On the one hand it teaches you to maximize efficiency in each technique, and on the other hand it teaches us to apply techniques in perfect timing and distance, not to conflict with the opponent’s power but rather use it to one’s advantage.

Training Karate benefits practitioners on a physical, mental, and spiritual level. Its ultimate goal lies in seeking the perfection of one’s character.

On the physical level, Karate is an amazing workout. Students do not have to be “in shape” to start classes, but rather gradually develop all aspects of physical fitness (cardiovascular, strength, agility, flexibility, balance, speed, reaction, coordination) as they progress through our program.

Students are encouraged to listen to the principles and apply them to their own bodies. A key aspect of karate that one must compete only with oneself – day by day. As students practice Karate their postures improve while they develop correct neuro-muscular movement patterns. Some of these patterns are moving from the ground and up, and from the center and out. This type of movement helps stabilize and protect one’s spine and joints.

In addition to being a complete workout, karate is fun and interesting. Moreover, it offers a journey of lifelong learning and improvement.

Karate is a moving meditation, with intention and breath initiating every action. The mind is engaged in the moment rather than in making its own “noise,” releasing personal stress. When facing an opponent there is an immediate feedback if the mind strays, and as a famous Samurai once said: “the mind should be nowhere in particular, but everywhere it needs to be.”

Iche-go Iche-ye – every moment only once – is a motto central to Shotokan Karate. For our practice it means that we emphasize strong spirit in our students, helping them put their all into every movement. This spirit and focus can be applied to different areas of our lives in order to maximize our potentials.
